After having examined the work of the Holy Spirit in the Old and New testaments, we now come to Part 3 of the trilogy which is the “……….Now” part.

In this book I will try and explain the work of the Holy Spirit right now, this very minute, today and tomorrow and for ever! I’ll also try and keep things more real for you. I will use some examples from my own life and from of course my dear wife Jacqui who has been a constant source of encouragement to me, including a good old fashioned finger wag on more occasions than I care to remember! She has a crooked forefinger on her right hand that I have come to know and appreciate very much. It is affectionately known as ‘the hook’, it has brought God’s correction and guidance to me on a number of occasions! It was also very good at keeping the children in line when they were younger when I wasn’t around through travelling for work.
I will relate here my first encounter with the Holy Spirit and as we move through the book I will take time to show you how he has used Jacqui and I to help others in their walk with Jesus and how he has guided us in our Christian walk through the good times and through the bad times.

Prior to getting ‘saved’ I had had no spiritual upbringing at all. As a child neither my parents nor I, nor my siblings were ‘churchgoers’. In fact, as a child, the only time my siblings and I went anywhere near a Church was to attend the annual Sunday school party. Then of course there was no spiritual attraction for me but rather the cakes, sweets and cold drinks – we used to call the fizzy cold drinks ‘pop’ in those days, I’ve no idea why though!

Perhaps it had something to do with the fizzy bubbles!

Virtually from the moment I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour I have been intrigued by the Holy Spirit and have always been in awe of the amazing things I have read about him doing and that I have witnessed Him do. As I’ve stated above I got saved in May 1988 in a little town called Mosel Bay on the Southern coast of South Africa. The church was a small Assemblies of God (AOG) congregation of about forty strong including children. The Pastor of this little church was a relatively young man but his ministry was very strongly Word based and from him I received good foundational teaching, the salvation message, water baptism and baptism of the Holy Spirit and the Gifts of the Spirit. This foundational teaching I received within about a six week period of being saved – a crash course one might say. My young pastor wasted no time in setting me on the road to maturity and I’m extremely grateful for that!

At my little church in Mosel Bay the Gifts of the Spirit were not only taught to the congregation but my young pastor actively encouraged each member of the congregation to operate in them. His personal favourites were tongues and the interpretation of tongues. Now being a brand new Christian with absolutely no spiritual upbringing or ‘churching’ whatsoever, I found the gifts of the spirit extremely strange and somewhat mystical - but I was hungry for them. From my very first teaching on speaking in tongues and hearing tongues being spoken and sung in the Sunday services, I’ve had a hunger and thirst for the Gifts of the Spirit. Although I didn’t fully realise it at the time, this was the Holy Spirit stirring me up and energising me.

Six weeks after getting saved, in July 1988, my wife and I were water baptised in the sea on Santos Beach, Mosel Bay. Two weeks later at a Sunday evening service, my young pastor was praying for another couple to be baptised in the Spirit and speaking in tongues when I suddenly felt a tingling sensation inside of me. This tingling sensation started in my stomach and came rising up to my throat and bubbled and simmered for a few seconds and finally burst out of my mouth in a very funny language. I had absolutely no idea of what I was saying or doing and felt extremely embarrassed. I was shaking like the proverbial leaf – I was speaking in tongues! I had received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit evidenced with the speaking in tongues. No one was more surprised than me; I rattled off and stuttered along like an over-heated machine gun!

Since that day, and as Paul encourages in 1 Corinthians 14:1 (KJV) Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy, I have eagerly desired the gifts of the Spirit especially the gift of prophecy and God has honoured that desire in me in many different and amazing ways over the years!

In this final part of the Holy Spirit Old, New and Now trilogy we examine what the scriptures say about the function and purpose of the Holy Spirit is in the lives of Christians now, today and for always. We will find out the importance of the infilling of the Holy Spirit in our lives as Christians and how we can live life in the Spirit as the scriptures encourage us to do and how essential the Holy Spirit is in enabling us to walk the path that God intends us to, to the glory of Jesus! Topics covered include: What Jesus says about the Holy Spirit and Now; Revival; the Rapture and End Times; Spiritual Warfare and a number of personal testimonies of how the Holy Spirit has worked in the life of the author, Ray Skilton, just an ordinary person like you!
