Expressing Ourselves

I don’t know how I got tangled up in the mess, but I know I never intended to. Was it my sister and her persistent urging to take her shopping? My mother’s nagging to get a job and do something with my life? Maybe it was my absent father’s lack of guidance. Maybe it was just me.
In any case, it started one afternoon in a alley. My friends and I were “expressing” ourselves. It’s not like we were hurting anyone, what’s one more layer of paint on the top of twenty others. But that’s not the way the cops saw it. They tackled two of my friends as we scattered like cockroaches. I was lucky I guess, I made it home.
Of course the second I stepped through the door the two women in my life were all over me - mom questioning me about my job search and Maria wanting me to play chauffeur. It doesn’t happen very often, but they came to an agreement – take Maria shopping and apply for jobs at the stores we visited. Now, I can hold myself against one of them, but against two? Well I got cleaned up, my cheek tweaked by my mom, and Maria and I were off.
