Fool's Gold

By Steve Stroble

Historical fiction | Paperback, eBook

Seventeen-year-old Thomas Schmidt loves his beer. But too much of it one night, and a tragic fight at the local Gasthaus sends him fleeing from his tiny village in 1830s Germany. He is so desperate to outrun the avenger pursuing him, that Thomas becomes an indentured servant to buy passage to America. Eventually, his misadventure leads him to the 1849 California Gold Rush. There, he's joined by one from China, an ex-slave, and a veteran of other gold strikes, discovering that the lust for gold can result in more pain and death than happiness... "Fool's Gold" is Book One of the Turning Point Series. The series covers three events that shaped America into what it is today: the 1849 California Gold Rush, which brought emigrants from around the world to California and began an exodus from the eastern United States westward; the decline and fall of the British and Ottoman Empires, which had ruled much of the world for centuries; and America's entry into wars in Cuba and the Philippines, which began over a century of foreign intervention.

Steve Stroble grew up as a military brat, which took him from South Dakota to South Carolina to Germany to Ohio to Southern California to Alabama to the Philippines to Northern California. Drafted into the Army, he returned to Germany. "I know I have a lot of nerve asking you to spend time with my imaginary characters instead of with your family, friends, neighbors, even acquaintances or strangers, because truth and real people are stranger than fiction," says the author. So his stories classified as historical fiction often weave historical events, people, and data into them. His science fiction stories try to present feasible even if not yet known technology. His dystopian and futuristic stories feature ordinary heroes and heroines stuck into extraordinary situations and seemingly ordinary villains who drain the life out of others' souls (their minds, wills, and emotions) by any means available.
