Ice Cream for Breakfast

By Elaine Johns

Women's fiction, Crime & mystery, Romance, Thriller | Paperback, eBook

Stevie is Head Receptionist and general dogsbody in a quirky Cornish hotel that has sloping floors and dodgy plumbing. The staff are a friendly bunch, if a little wacky. There’s a mediocre cook, who calls himself a Chef, and comes with tattoos across his knuckles that say ‘game over’. The young Kitchen Porter who breaks out in spots at inconvenient times, but makes incredible, weapons grade coffee. And Doris, the Head Chambermaid, a solid woman, all bust and bat wing arms who packs the punch of a small nuclear warhead. Harry, the owner, lapses into a confusing Brooklyn accent and has a spreading waistline thanks to his fondness for the local ale called ‘Betty Stogs’. But Stevie sorts them all out and still has time to find her perfect toy-boy.

Elaine Johns was born in Belfast and came to London to attend the Italia Conti Performing Arts Academy. She made records with her twin brother, Derek, which ‘scraped’ their way into the charts in her teens. She has travelled the world as a musician, playing the flute and singing in big bands where she met her partner, Larry Johns, a jazz saxophonist and novelist. (See his website: www.kornwall.co.uk). They played in night clubs, hotels and cruise ships, returning home to a residency in the rooftop club at the London Park Lane Hilton. Her twin brother, Derek, may be better known to those who follow the BBC Series ‘Casualty’ as Charlie Fairhead. Derek, who is known to many of his friends on the series as ‘the apothecary’ has gleaned quite a lot of medical facts over his many years of appearing in the series, but as he himself will freely admit, he only knows enough ‘real medicine’ to actually kill you. Elaine was a print and television journalist in Bahrain for 4 years and is now a freelance, writing mostly short stories and articles for women’s magazines. She has written several books in different genres including Crime/thriller, Contemporary Women’s Fiction and Children’s. She lives in Cornwall and writes every day. She and Larry have two grown up sons: Matt, a jazz pianist and Sam, an engineer. Elaine loves reading and music and getting the most out of life whatever it throws at you. Elaine also teaches a part-time creative writing class at Truro College in Cornwall, U.K.
