On Democracy - A Novel

By Alex Athanassakos

Current affairs | Paperback, eBook

This is the story of Fahim and John - the former an Afghani interpreter the latter a Canadian lieutenant - and their discussion of democracy under Afghanistan's starry night. Their conversation covers the problems that societies face in making collective decisions and the institutional and behavioural changes required to overcome them. What is democracy? What are its benefits and its shortcomings? What do we give up when we allow elected officials to represent us in collective decisions? In the face of persistent failure, is it fair to keep blaming the politicians or should we blame the system? Fahim advances an alternative to party competition and representative democracy in his recounting of the political system of Atopia. What follows, although unconventional and unfamiliar, is a human-compatible method of choosing the people who govern us and a more democratic approach to making collective decisions about the public goods we consume and the principles we espouse as a society.
