Charles Ames Pomeroy

Charles Pomeroy, born in Beloit, Wisconsin, on Nov.6, 1930, enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served as an aircrew member specialized in electronics until honorably discharged in 1956. He served with Patrol Squadron Six during the Korean War, flying 79 missions out of bases in Japan. An interest in that country led to his return to Japan in 1957 as a student. After graduating from Tokyo's Sophia University in 1962, he freelanced as a translator, then became a correspondent in 1966 covering Japan’s healthcare sector until retirement in 2004. His retirement took him to a new home in his wife's hometown of Otsuchi on Japan's Sanriku Coast, where he returned to his earlier ambition of creating woodblock prints. His idyllic retirement was ended by the tsunami of March 11, 2011, that destroyed the town and his home. His latest book, "Tsunami Reflections," provides insights on that disaster. He authored two earlier books, "Traditional Crafts of Japan" (1967) and "Pharma Delegates" (2014). He also served as general editor of “Correspondents in Japan” published by Tuttle (1998).
