Relative Values

By Phil Whitney

Historical fiction | Paperback, eBook

Two young Englishmen travel to Italy, fifty years apart. Max, an idealistic young communist, unable to find work during the Depression, lives by taking casual jobs as he makes his way southwards. He soon finds himself up against the brutal fascist regime. Paul, a recent graduate in Italian, hopes to find work teaching English, and see what he can discover about his mysterious Italian grandmother and the grandfather who was killed in the war. He is met by hostility and a wall of silence, soon realising that his family's past holds dark and dangerous secrets. Real historic events, the beautiful city of Florence and the heartland of Chianti provide the setting for this tense story.

Born in Oldham and graduating from Leeds in Italian and History of Art, Phil Whitney spent several years in Italy, where he wrote two guide books, before returning to England and working first as a Chartered Accountant and then as an English teacher. Leaving full-time teaching in 2014 to concentrate on writing, Phil now divides his time between Tuscany and Derbyshire's Peak District.
