I was designed by the space I was born into and I, in turn, attempt to design that space in ways which will benefit myself and others, and which will make it design me and others in better and more productive ways. There is a couplet from a poem in 'Country of My Skull', written by a student from Ladybrand about the Malutis and their reenruikende kombers: as jy gesien het het jy vir altyd gesien And some Stanley Kunitz: “I have walked through many lives some of them my own and I am not who I was” And, obviously, some Whitman: “I am the mate and companion of people, all just as immortal and fathomless as myself” Too melodramatic? ;)
